Survey: 74840 Facebook Users in The Gambia

Facebook mania is gradually creeping up in The Gambia. According to Socialbakers, the social media statistics portal, there are currently 74840 Facebook users in the The Gambia, "which makes it #150 in the ranking of all Facebook statistics by country." Within the last six months, the number of users increased by 4600 representing a 6.55 per cent jump.

Senegal at #90 and Nigeria at #34 have 620620 and 4369740 users respectively. More people use Facebook in The Gambia than in Togo or in Sierra Leone or in Niger. In the 213-country survey, the United States scores the highest with 157412260 users whilst the Vatican City has the lowest with only 20 users.

According to Facebook, there are over 800m active users worldwide. Of this, about 350m access Facebook through their mobil devices. The increase in Facebook usage in The Gambia has been attributed hugely to the proliferation of mobil phones in the country. Sidestepping the hassles of the Internet cafes, many Gambians are now just a finger-touch away from accessing their Facebook accounts.

Comparing these nearest countries by penetration of Facebook users shows that The Gambia has 0.08% higher FB penetration than Vietnam and 0.29% lower FB penetration than Iraq.

 The largest age group is currently 18 - 24 with total of 29 188 users, followed by the users in the age of 25 - 34.

There are 69% male users and 31% female users in The Gambia, compared to 53% and 47% in Cape Verde and 46% and 54% in Netherlands Antilles .

On the graph below, it is observed that the biggest gain in the last 3 months was recorded by the age group of 35 - 44.
