ECOWAS Tournament underway in Basse
07/04/2011 02:01A six-nation football tournament dubbed “the ECOWAS tournament” is currently underway at the Basse high level football field in the Upper River Region. The tournament is organised by one Alhagie Nyang, a sport loving person of Basse and is being played among aliens residing in Basse.
The participating countries are: The Gambia as host; Senegal, Mauritania, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Guinea Conakry. In the opening games of the weekend, the Guinean side saw off the weak Gambia side by 2-1 on Friday, while Senegal drew 2-2 with Sierra Leone a day later on Saturday. Speaking to this reporter in URR, Alhagie Nyang said the tournament is meant to bring about cordial relation and understanding among the aliens of these countries residing in Basse.
Nyang who was praised by many people for this first ever tournament, said this will go a long way in achieving tolerance and love among the people, therefore paving the way for African unity. He therefore calls on the participating countries to maintain peace during the tournament, as it is meant to have fun and to know each other more.
According to him, the tournament is also good to make the readers know that the young man has been very supportive to the cause of sports development in Basse and URR in general. “We therefore hope other people will emulate him,” he said.
