The chairman of the Basse Area Council was Thursday arraigned before the Banjul Magistrates Court, presided over by Principal Magistrate Sheriff Tabally, charged with giving false information to a public officer contrary to the Laws of The Gambia.

According to police prosecutors, Omar Sompo Ceesay, sometime in the month of August 2011 in the city of Banjul, wrote a petition to the Office of the President claiming that the governor of Upper River Region (URR) Alhaji Omar Khan lobbied for the transfer of Yusupha Manneh, the chief executive officer of Basse Area Council and also recommended Pa Amadou Susso to the Ministry of Local Government and Lands as the chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, knowing that the said information was false, thereby committed an offence.

When the charge was read to him, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. At that juncture, Police prosecutor Sgt Manga applied for an adjournment for him to call his witness. The accused was granted bail in the sum of D200, 000 with two Gambian sureties.

The case was adjourned to 4th January 2012.
