A canoe accident claimed the lives of four young people yesterday in the Upper River Region (URR). Buba Njie, 18; Malick Sanno, 19; Ousman Touray, 20; and Sankung Drammeh, 25; were all natives of Allunghareh village in the URR. Only one Muhammed Tunkara of the same village survived the accident.

According to sources, Tunkara and the others were on their way back from the north bank of the river where they went to find some grasses when their canoe capsized. The corpses were taken to the Basse Major Health Centre, and later back to their village for burial the same day.

Present at the burial were OC Keita of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Basse, andSellu Bah, incumbent NAM for Basse Constituency. Hundreds of mourners, relatives, neighbours and friends also converged on the village central mosque to pay their last respects to the departed souls.
